Yelp just announced that it has reached an agreement with the federal government allowing users to review federal agencies and offices. This will allow agencies to claim their Yelp pages, accept reviews and utilize feedback to improve their operations.

While it has been possible to review federal agencies for years, the landmark detail in this development is that agencies will now be able to respond to reviews. This advancement has created a newfound dialogue which will allow these governing bodies to truly hear and respond to difficulties regularly affecting consumers.

Yelp users are encouraged to review agencies, national parks, landmarks, Social Security Administration offices and other locations in the effort of helping better their services. In a blog post announcing the agreement Yelp stated, “In the weeks and months ahead, we’re excited to help the federal government more directly interact with and respond to the needs of citizens and to further empower the millions of Americans who use Yelp every day.”

In order for reviews to aid in improving an agency’s services, they must be constructive and not simply a blatant, angered attack. By the same token, to make a concerted effort to progress, agencies and offices must truly heed the public’s comments and try to genuinely address their issues.

No system is perfect, but this agreement between Yelp and the federal government is a success which suggests a better tomorrow for the American consumer.
