A Forgotten Chapter in U.S. History: When Women Had To Choose Between Mortgages and Motherhood

As we round out the last day of Women’s History Month, we at NAWRB found this eye-opening story a relevant one to share:

It was 1972 when 25-year-old Marjorie Wintjen and 27-year-old Paul Wintjen sought a mortgage for a home that would suit their four-person family, all with a $14,000 salary between the two of them.

“But their lending officer didn’t want to count Marjorie’s income. the officer agreed to include half of it, which would enable them to qualify for the mortgage, if the Wintjens would agree to one condition: She would have to provide a medical certificate stating that she was sterilized.”
