The Need to Build Resilient Infrastructure and Housing

In the wake of winter storm Jonas that has left many Northeastern states under more than two feet of snow, the necessity to make our infrastructure more resilient to natural disasters becomes eminent.

The U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), in collaboration with the Rockefeller Foundation, conducted the National Disaster Resilience Competition (NDRC), held over a span of 16 months. Thirteen states and communities were announced as the winners after they presented “specific projects that would advance their community’s resilience plans.” In total, the funding awarded by HUD and NDRC for the construction of resilient infrastructure and housing amounted to $1 billion.

The Winners

  • California: $70,359,459 for Community and Watershed Resilience Program in Tuolumne County
  • Louisiana: $92,629,249 for Louisiana Strategic Adaptations for Future Environments Program
  • New Jersey: $15,000,000 for Regional Resiliency Planning Grant Program
  • Connecticut: $54,277,359 for Connecticut Connections Coastal Resilience Plan
  • Iowa: $96,887,177 for Iowa Watershed Approach
  • City of New York – $176,000,000 for Lower Manhattan Project and Connect Project
  • State of New York – $35,800,000 for Statewide Public Housing Resiliency Programs
  • Tennessee: $44,502,374 for Rural by Nature Initiative
  • New Orleans: $141,260,569 for Resilience District in the Gentilly Neighborhood
  • Minot, ND: $74,340,770 for a Set of Three Integrated Projects
  • Shelby County, TN: $60,445,163 for Greenprint for Resilience Project
  • Virginia: $120,549,000 for Ohio Creek Watershed and the Coastal Resilience Laboratory and Accelerator Center
  • Springfield, MA: $17,056,880 for Urban Watershed Resilience Zone

With numerous occurrences of earthquakes, floods and tornadoes, it is essential to understand that climate change and natural disasters are unavoidable. We need a stronger infrastructure and resilient homes to keep us and future generations safe during these earthly occurrences.
