International Women’s Day Game – Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo

Key traits: creativity, individualism

Frida Kahlo was born in Mexico City, Mexico in 1907 where she grew up with her three sisters in a blue house. Her life was far from easy. She contracted polio at 5 years old and when she was 18, a bus accident injured her to the point where she was hospitalized with a full-body cast. Her painting helped sustain her through physical pain. In 1929, Frida married a fellow Mexican painter, Diego Rivera. The two tried to have a child, but Frida suffered three miscarriages. In 1939, she exhibited her paintings in Paris. The Louvre bought her painting, The Frame, which made it the first work by a 20th-century Mexican artist to be purchased by an internationally acclaimed museum. She showed her first solo exhibition in Mexico in 1953, despite being bedridden. She died of pulmonary embolism the next year on July 13th. Today she is remembered for her creativity, unique look, and ability to turn her pain into art.
