The U.S. Census Bureau reports that the poverty rate among the Hispanic population dropped to the lowest level recorded in 2017, at 18.3 percent. This decline is not only the largest year-to-year drop among all demographic groups—1.1 percentage points from 2016—but also the lowest poverty estimate for Hispanics since they were first reported in 1972.
The U.S. Census Bureau has recently released their findings on income and poverty estimates for the nation’s states, counties and school districts in the new Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates (SAIPE) report. Key findings for the year 2017 are that 11.3 percent of counties had a statistically significant increase in median household income compared to 2007, while 7.5 percent had a decreased in that same time period.
The U.S. Census Bureau just released findings on the rapidly growing older population, of adults ages 65 and older, in a report. Due to a trend of lower birth rates and longer life spans, the growth of the older population now exceeds the total population and the population of citizens under the age of 65.

Today marks 242 years of independence for the United States! The Fourth of July is a day in which the nation celebrates the anniversary of the Declaration of Independence signed on July 1776. In commemoration of Independence Day, the U.S. Census Bureau has released interesting facts about the Founding Fathers, the nation’s changing population and the various ways Americans celebrate this national holiday.
The U.S. Census Bureau recently released a tip sheet from the 2016 County Business Patterns (CBP), showing an overall growth in employment from 2015 to 2016. Among its highlights, the construction sector led with the highest rate of employment growth, at 5 percent, while Florida had the largest percentage increase in first quarter employment, also at 5 percent.
The National Women’s Business Council (NWBC), a non-partisan federal advisory council for the White House, Congress, and U.S. Small Business Administration, released their comment on the U.S. Census Bureau’s proposed Annual Business Survey (ABS). In addition to applauding the Census Bureau’s efforts at provide a larger breadth of data on employer firms, the Council suggests data considerations for a more comprehensive look at the state of women entrepreneurs and nonemployer firms in the country.
