Senator Kamala Harris Proposes Equal Pay Certification for Large Companies

Women who work full time are paid about 80 cents for every dollar a man makes, which adds up to over $400,000 in missed wages over a woman’s career. For minority women, the loss is about $1 million in missed wages, according to the National Women’s Law Center.

Low Spacesuit Supply Forces NASA to Cancel First All-Female Spacewalk

NASA had to cancel the first all-female spacewalk scheduled for last Friday because the International Space Station (ISS) did not have enough space suits to fit both women. NASA astronauts Anne McClain and Christina Koch were going to perform the spacewalk together to install new lithium-ion batteries in a solar array, supported by a female flight controller on the ground. Not having enough space suits for female astronauts indicates more work needs to be done to reach gender parity in the space industry.

Today, April 2nd, marks Equal Pay Day, a day representing how far into the new year women have to work to earn the same amount of money men did the previous year. About four months into 2019 women finally equaled men’s 2018 earnings, due to the pervasive gender pay gap that results in women earning approximately 80 cents to every man’s dollar.

Last weekend, over 6,000 women, from international leaders and executive women, to celebrities and politicians, gathered at the 2018 United State of Women Summit in Los Angeles, California, to discuss women’s issues and gender equality. Following the inaugural, day-long event in 2016, this year’s multi-industry event was extended to two days chalk full of main stage and breakout sessions, networking opportunities, skills-based trainings and an interactive center with women-owned businesses and organizations.

mPower: Finding Solutions to Sexual Harassment in the Real Estate Finance Industry

mPower, a national platform for women in the real estate finance industry created by the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA), released the findings of their informal survey of women’s experiences of sexual harassment in the workplace. “As the leading voice for the real estate finance industry, MBA creates opportunities to leverage the power and influence of women,” states mPower’s mission. “We provide the platform for women to strengthen their networks, achieve professional growth and development, and to exchange ideas and information about our industry and the broader economy.”
