New Corporate Diversity Bill Tackles Obstacles to Diverse Leadership

In February, Representative Gregory W. Meeks (D-N.Y.) introduced the H.R. 1018 – Improving Corporate Governance Through Diversity Act of 2019, which will require public companies to disclose the gender, race, ethnicity and veteran status of their board directors, nominees and senior executive officers, as a way to track the progress of diverse representation in the corporate sphere.

“Diversity has been proven to have a positive impact on business performance, and it is only natural for investors to want to know which companies are choosing to bring in a wealth of different perspectives into their corporate board rooms,” Representative Meeks said in an official statement. “Revealing the gender, racial, ethnic, and veteran makeup of these corporate C-suites and boardrooms will not only shed light on the value of diversity, but hopefully encourage corporate shareholders to increase diversity in the highest ranks of their corporations.”

Increasing Gender Diversity Without Quotas

Diversity and inclusion (D&I) continues to be a priority in the corporate world, especially in the housing ecosystem. To increase opportunities for women, some have advocated legislative action. One example is California’s potential SB 826 bill, a law that would require the state’s largest public companies to have at least one woman on their board by the end of 2019. While such policy action may be perceived as long overdue, enforcing quotas is not an all-encompassing solution to the lack of diversity in companies’ executive positions.

SB 826 Women On Boards Passes. What Happens Next?

SB 826, known as the women on boards bill, narrowly cleared the California State Assembly with the minimum amount of votes required and then went on to clear the state Senate. The measure requiring corporate boards to include at least one woman by the end of 2019 and depending on the size of the company, up to three by the end of 2021 now sits on Governor Jerry Brown’s desk waiting to be approved or vetoed. HUD Announces Nearly $99 Million Awarded for Disabled Residents

On Tuesday, HUD issued a press release announcing its awarding of $98.5 million to 285 public housing authorities across the country. These housing vouchers are intended to provide permanent housing assistance to “non-elderly persons with disabilities” who are, according to HUD, either transitioning out of institutional or other separated settings, at serious risk of institutionalization or who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

The press release emphasized that these are new vouchers, providing permanent housing to an additional 12,000 low-income disabled residents per year and that it meets the Americans with Disabilities Act goal by helping people with disabilities to live in an integrated setting.

They also provided a list of the PHAs in each state that have been awarded the vouchers and for which amounts.

One to Watch: ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Showcases Diversity Within Asian Communities

One has only to look at the AREAA (Asian Real Estate Association of America) 2017-18 report, State of Asia America, to see evidence of the strong diversity within the Asian American community. According to the report, the Asian American and Pacific Islander community is the fastest growing demographic in the United States, both in terms of natural born citizens and immigrants. Six ethnic groups within the Asian community number over one million each and over eight million people in the US speak either Chinese, Tagalog, Vietnamese, Korean or Hindi. These numbers are perhaps one reason the film Crazy Rich Asians coming to theaters this coming Wednesday, August 15th is generating tons of breathless excitement.

For the first time at a NAWRB Conference, mPower (Mortgage Banker’s Association Promoting Opportunities for Women to Extend their Reach) presented a panel, kicking off our Year of Women with style and substance.

NAWRB President and CEO, Desirée Patno introduced MBA COO and Founder of mPower Marcia Davies noting “This is the first time we have had a collective group of women and men from all different industries and this panel is the first time we have had MBA be a part of us.”
