According to the Alzheimer’s Association, 5.8 million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease, and this number is projected to increase to 14 million by 2050. Of this number, 13.8 million people will be age 65 years and older, making it difficult for medical breakthroughs to slow or cure the disease for existing conditions.
The U.S. Census Bureau recently released new 5-year estimates from the 2014-2018 American Community Survey (ACS), which covers over forty demographic topics, including a newly added section profiling the 65 and older population. Key findings of the report show that the median age of the U.S. older population was 73.2 years, and Sumter County, Florida, had the highest percentage of residents aged 65 and older, at 55.6 percent.
One in five older Americans live in rural areas, with many concentrated in states where more than half of the older population lives in rural areas, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s recent The Older Population in Rural America: 2012-2016. The report shows that 17.5 percent of the rural population was 65 years and older during this time compared to 13.8 percent in urban areas.
Today marks National Senior Citizens Day, which recognizes the achievements of the older population in the United States in appreciation of the dedication and services they have given throughout their lives. In honor of this day, the U.S. Census Bureau has released key statistics about the growing older population.
In honor of Memorial Day on May 27th, 2019, a holiday honoring the women and men who have died in military service for the United States, NAWRB is highlighting the current state of older veterans living in the states. The aging population of veterans, an often overlooked segment of U.S. citizens, face a variety of obstacles when it comes to receiving VA health care and disability benefits.
